Why does an alternator rotate counter-clockwise if the engine rotates.

Is there any reason a marine alternator with built in electronic regulator cannot be run in the opposite direction it's designed for IF proper cooling is still available? I can see that spinning it backwards with the existing fan blades won't cool it, but other than that, I can't see how direction would matter. Thoughts?.
